A large-scale search and rescue mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated sailboats transporting relief goods journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Search Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine personnel, according to a military release.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation endures repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Humanitarian Mission

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had transported a significant amount of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and food.

Larger International Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.

Global bodies have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from different officials emphasizing the delicate nature of bilateral relations.

Reacting to recent proposals, a senior government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to discover the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
