A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
