Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
