Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Shelved Shortly After Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

There are "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar indicating Trump had pushed him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the conflict on the current front line.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the present battle positions.

Moscow was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
