The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him publicly stated that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.
Matteo's Surprising Comeback
A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
