New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
