Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Chronicling Three Weeks In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a memoir this autumn called Diary of a Prisoner, which recounts his experience endured in jail.

The revelation emerged shortly following the former president gained freedom as he contests the court ruling for unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to secure presidential race money linked to the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, implying the account will focus on his reflections during seclusion as opposed to wider commentary of the overcrowded and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing at the prison, where one hears a lot to hear,” he continues. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world grows stronger behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, the former leader was present remotely from his cell, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this nightmare tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It leaves a mark all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

The former president, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader of France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he declared he would use his time to write a book.

Cell Library

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to go through the volumes he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, in which a blameless person ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He was placed secluded to protect him in a space roughly 100 square feet including private facilities in the Paris jail in Paris. Guards were stationed in the next cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed solely dairy snacks while inside worried that meals provided could have been tampered with. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, according to reports. Unclear remains if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain each day throughout the jail term, informed the court he would be safer outside jail than inside. “There were threats against his life, listened to yells after dark and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began on 21 October when the judiciary imposed five years in prison for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial planned for the coming spring.
