The pace bowler further complicated England's injury problems when he left the playing area on the second morning of the fourth Ashes Test against Australia.

The pace bowler felt a problem in his hamstring post-delivery that he bowled on Saturday.

The England team indicated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and was to take time on the sidelines for further assessment "in the coming hours".

The series decider of the series in Sydney begins on Sunday, 4 January.

The English side has previously lost key quicks Mark Wood with a knee problem and another paceman to a side strain on this Ashes tour.

Matthew Fisher was added to the party as cover for Wood.

Atkinson struggled during the first two matches, taking just a handful of scalps.

He was omitted for the Adelaide match, then recalled for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI.

The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets during the host's first knock, then making 28 as a batsman as one of just three England players to reach double figures.

Following a brief spell late on the first day, he resumed for the second day's play and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper.

However, at the end of his spell, he bowled a change of pace to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.
