An informant has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities abandoned confidential technology permitting Afghanistan's rulers to track down local individuals that had served with international military.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the information breach were advised to relocate and switch their contact details to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into the Conservative government's response of a serious breach of confidential data concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to come to Britain to escape the Taliban.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet with confidential details, such as names, contact details and in some cases family information, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker stationed at British military command in February 2022.

The incident came to light only in August 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to the UK were posted on social media.

Preliminary research submitted to the inquiry estimated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and associates of people concerned by the leak had been executed.

A gag order concerning the breach was implemented in last year and restricted all details about it from media reporting until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she was working with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they change residence where feasible and altered their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities had access to such data, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower disputed that an official review performed by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are not confronting militant forces; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained horrific treatment suffered by concerned people, including electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to pressure households to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
