The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
