The former Liverpool manager says rejoining to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that returning someday is something that could happen. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-year spell featuring a European Cup triumph and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, currently occupies roles in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and as an advisor for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
Liverpool won the league title in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would welcome the idea that he might come back one day. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with his interviewer: “I stated I will never coach another team in England. Which implies in case it's my former club...yes. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests I could make the decision in a few years, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, I don’t have to do that. I'll wait and observe how things unfold.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
When asked about which situations would have to unfold to bring him back to the touchline, he confessed he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “I don't crave being a coach; No desire to be under bad weather through long matches; I don’t miss going to media briefings four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews each week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, but sitting in a restaurant with the team enjoying conversation, that’s nice. We won a lot of games so there was often a very good mood around the place. I can still hear the captain's chuckle vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly regarding Arne Slot, acknowledging his role for the tweaks that took the title in the previous season. The team has suffered a string of losses in all competitions following significant transfers, yet he dismissed the idea it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. The French striker, superb talent. They have a strong balanced team. You don’t have to worry over the club, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
He shared movingly on the loss of Jota, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, along with the consequences at the club. The forward was killed in a road accident with his brother this past summer.
“Who can fill the void of such an individual? This isn't just regarding the player himself, his personality mattered. It's hard to picture the team environment absent his presence. I find it difficult to discuss on this topic. A devastating blow for his teammates also. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it for poor performances yet it's the reality. You walk in a dressing room which he filled completely. Coping with it on a personal level is difficult. Overwhelming.”
