The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
