The Northern Irish champion hails Sports Personality victory with individual and team awards.
Moments before his name was called, a nervous worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He said he was thinking, "Not an F1 driver again."
"This has been a great night for golf," he stated. "Our game was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can build upon that."
In this instance, however, there was no dramatic upset. The result was uncontested, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned the top squad.
A Whirlwind Schedule
Instead of opting to attend the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already thinking about his upcoming event. After played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to Miami.
"The last 24 hours have been a frantic 24 hours," he said. "My plan is for a little bit of a break over Christmas."
Hunger for More
Nevertheless, McIlroy insisted he has no plans to become complacent, despite completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a several strong seasons in me," he remarked.
"Additional major championships, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's great. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the essential part."
Team Triumph
Meanwhile, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also praised golf's stellar night and his pal's personal achievement.
"They are the memories that will live with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is truly special," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."
When reminded that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "We're not the most popular are we!"
Future Goals
He is aiming to finally win his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.
United Hopes
Before McIlroy left, an additional topic arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be convinced to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"Provided that they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," McIlroy responded with a laugh. "They're getting better. There's a little bit of positivity around."
After a 2025 for the ages, it's understandable that he is looking on the positive aspects.
