Triple NBA MVP Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee when the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 against the Heat.

Jokic sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half during an unintentional collision with team-mate Spencer Jones.

Jones landed on the foot of the MVP, who instantly went down to the ground holding his knee.

The 30-year-old, who tops the league season in rebounds and assists, had 21 points and eight assists in the game before suffering the injury.

The player will undergo an scan on Tuesday to determine the seriousness of the issue.

"Right away, he understood something was wrong," said Nuggets head coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone who gets hurt, that's difficult, particularly a player as special as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"We will continue as a team. Obviously, right now, I am focused primarily about Jokic personally and the disappointment of facing a situation like that."
