Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
