What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
